Born in Liverpool, Thomas Harling grew up in Toronto and graduated from UTS in 1914. Early the next year he joined the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion, and was sent to the front near Ypres in March 1916. On 3 June, he and his company were fighting in the Battle of Zillebeke when one of his men was caught underneath a collapsed dug-out. Harling was struck by a shell in the act of rescuing the soldier, and died en route to the emergency medical station. He is buried in the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground near Ypres. His final words were “God bless the boys.”
